This presentation will explore various methods on holding small group discussion in the classroom (for any grade level). We will explore many methods, including fishbowl, jigsaw, rotating trios, circle of voices, think-pair-share, and buzz groups.

Mike Schmoker's book FOCUS will be referenced and used as a framework for the session. Participants will experience and learn simple yet practical ways to implement Schmoker's authentic literacy and interactive lecture templates into their classrooms. |

Socratic Dialogue - A Tool for checking for Understanding Science

Participants will be introduced to the art of guiding students' thinking and learning by asking questions. This technique is known as Socratic dialog. The objectives will focus on 1) Engaging students by “White Boarding” - sessions where students articulate both verbally and with drawings their own thinking and evaluate by comparison to presentations of other students' thoughts 2) Clarification of objectives for the lesson of the day 3) Check for student understanding of concepts during a lesson.
